The use of gelatin capsules in medicine is a common topic of concern in the Halal industry. Traditional capsules are often made from bovine (cow) or porcine (pig) gelatin. For a capsule to be considered Halal, the gelatin must be derived from animals slaughtered according to Islamic rites, or be of vegetable origin (such as HPMC capsules). Many contemporary scholars allow the use of non-Halal capsules if no Halal alternative exists and the medicine is necessary for life-saving treatment, following the principle of "Necessity permits the prohibited." However, the growth of the Halal pharmaceutical industry is making certified vegetable capsules more widely available.
