Jahiliyyah refers to the "Age of Ignorance" or darkness that existed in Arabia before the advent of Islam. It does not merely refer to a lack of academic knowledge, but rather a spiritual ignorance characterized by idolatry, tribal injustice, and moral decay, such as the burying of female infants alive. The coming of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) brought the light of Islam to abolish the Jahiliyyah system and replace it with a society based on justice, monotheism, and human dignity. In a modern context, the term is sometimes used to describe any society that neglects Divine guidance. Jahiliyyah is the state of ignorance of divine guidance. It is not the absence of knowledge but the absence of knowledge of the Creator and His guidance. The pre-Islamic Arabs had poetry, trade, and tribal organization, but they lacked knowledge of Allah and His prophets. The practices of Jahiliyyah included idol worship, tribal warfare, female infanticide, exploitation of the weak, and the absence of justice. The Quran condemns these practices and calls them to the light of Islam. The term Jahiliyyah is used in the Quran: "Do they seek the judgment of [the days of] ignorance? And who is better than Allah in judgment for a people who are certain [in faith]?" (5:50). This verse contrasts the judgment of Allah with the judgment of Jahiliyyah. In modern times, the term is sometimes used to describe any society or system that operates without reference to divine guidance. Some scholars use it to describe aspects of modern society that resemble pre-Islamic ignorance: materialism, injustice, moral decay, and the rejection of divine law. The concept of Jahiliyyah reminds that without divine guidance, societies fall into darkness. It calls Muslims to bring the light of Islam to their own lives and to society. It also reminds that Islam came to abolish injustice and to establish justice, mercy, and dignity for all. Jahiliyyah is not a historical period only but a condition that can exist whenever and wherever people turn away from Allah's guidance. The call of Islam is to leave the darkness of ignorance and enter the light of faith, to replace injustice with justice, and to submit to Allah alone. Jahiliyyah calls believers to be conscious of the darkness that surrounds them and to be bearers of light, guided by the Quran and Sunnah, striving to establish justice and mercy in their own lives and communities.
