Malak Al-Mawt

ملك الموت
Text Size:
Malak al-Mawt, often referred to as Azrael in some traditions, is the "Angel of Death" tasked by Allah with taking the souls of human beings at the appointed time of their passing. The Quran states that for every person, there is a fixed term that can neither be delayed nor advanced. Malak al-Mawt does not act of his own accord but is a faithful executor of God's command. For the righteous, the angel is said to appear in a beautiful form, bringing ease and glad tidings of Paradise as the soul is gently extracted from the body. The Quran mentions the Angel of Death: "Say, 'The angel of death who has been entrusted with you will take you, then to your Lord you will be returned'" (32:11). This verse establishes that there is a specific angel entrusted with taking souls, though it does not name him. In tradition, he is called Azrael, though scholars differ on whether this name is from revelation or later tradition. Malak al-Mawt has assistants who help him take souls. The Prophet said: "The Angel of Death has assistants who pull the soul out of the body like a skewer through wet wool" (Ahmad). For the righteous, the process is gentle; for the wicked, it is painful. The soul is extracted from the body, and then the angels of mercy or punishment take it. Malak al-Mawt acts only by Allah's command. He does not take a soul before its appointed time, nor does he delay. The Prophet said: "When the time of death approaches, the Angel of Death comes to the person and looks at him. If he is among the people of Paradise, he appears in a beautiful form; if he is among the people of Hell, he appears in a terrifying form" (Ahmad). The experience of death varies according to the person's deeds. The righteous soul is taken gently, and the angels of mercy say: "Come out, O pure soul, to the forgiveness and pleasure of Allah" (Ahmad). The wicked soul is torn out, and the angels of punishment say: "Come out, O wicked soul, to the wrath and anger of Allah" (Ahmad). For believers, the Angel of Death is a reminder of the certainty of death. They know that every soul will taste death, and that the angel will come at the appointed time. They prepare for that meeting by living righteously, so that when Malak al-Mawt appears, he appears in a beautiful form, and the soul is taken gently. The believer does not fear death but prepares for it. They seek Allah's mercy and forgiveness, knowing that the state in which they die will determine how the Angel of Death appears and how the soul is taken. The Prophet taught that the best death is to be in a state of faith, with the last words being the Shahada. The believer also seeks refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave and the trials of death. The Prophet taught a supplication: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death" (Bukhari, Muslim). For believers, Malak al-Mawt is a servant of Allah, not an object of fear. They trust that Allah's mercy will be with them at the time of death, and they prepare for that moment by living a life of faith, righteousness, and constant repentance. They know that death is not the end but the transition to the Hereafter, and they strive to meet their Lord in a state of peace, saying: "O soul at peace, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing" (89:27-28).
