Yawm Al-Adha

Yawm al-Adha (The Day of Sacrifice) is the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, and marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage. It is the primary day of Eid al-Adha, one of the two major Islamic festivals. This sacred day commemorates the profound devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him), who demonstrated ultimate submission to Allah by willingly preparing to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (Ishmael). Allah honored this act of faith by replacing Ismail with a ram, establishing the tradition of sacrifice (Udhiyah or Qurbani) as a righteous deed. The Quran recounts: "And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice" (37:107). On Yawm al-Adha, Muslims worldwide who can afford it sacrifice an animal (sheep, goat, cow, or camel), distributing the meat to family, friends, and especially the poor and needy. The day begins with a special congregational prayer followed by the sacrifice. Pilgrims in Mecca perform symbolic stoning of the devil (Ramy al-Jamarat) and complete their Hajj rites. The spiritual significance lies in submitting to Allah's command, sharing blessings with others, and remembering that true piety is measured by sincerity and Taqwa, not merely by rituals: "Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you" (22:37).
