Yawm Al-Nahr

يوم النحر
Text Size:
Yawm al-Nahr (The Day of Sacrifice) refers to the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, which is the primary day of Eid al-Adha. The term "Nahr" specifically denotes the ritual sacrifice of camels by piercing their necks, though it encompasses all sacrificial animals offered during this blessed day. This day marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage, when pilgrims in Mina perform the symbolic stoning of the devil (Ramy al-Jamarat) and sacrifice animals, while Muslims worldwide observe the Eid celebration. The Quran commands: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice" (108:2), understood by scholars as referring to the Eid prayer and the sacrifice. The day commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham) ultimate act of submission when he was commanded to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (Ishmael). As both submitted to Allah's will, Allah ransomed Ismail with a magnificent ram, establishing the tradition of sacrifice as an enduring symbol of faith and obedience. The meat from sacrificed animals is distributed in three parts: one-third for the family, one-third for relatives and friends, and one-third for the poor and needy, ensuring that the joy of Eid reaches all community members. The spiritual significance lies not in the meat or blood reaching Allah, but in the piety and sincerity behind the sacrifice (22:37).
