Yawm al-Waid

يوم الوعيد
Text Size:
Yawm al-Waid (The Day of Threat) is one of the many names for the Day of Judgment in Islamic eschatology, emphasizing Allah's solemn warning to humanity about the consequences of disbelief and wrongdoing. This term appears in the context of Quranic verses that describe the inevitable punishment awaiting those who reject divine guidance and persist in transgression. The "threat" encompasses the severe accountability, the blazing fire of Hell (Jahannam), and the regret that will overwhelm the disbelievers when they face the reality of their deeds. The Quran frequently pairs warning (waid) with promise (wa'd) to maintain balance between fear and hope in the believer's heart. As Allah says: "Announce to My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful, and that My punishment is the painful punishment" (15:49-50). Understanding Yawm al-Waid encourages believers to take Allah's warnings seriously while never despairing of His mercy. It motivates righteous conduct, sincere repentance (Tawbah), and preparation for the meeting with one's Lord. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that a intelligent person is one who subdues their ego and works for what comes after death.
