Buhtan

البهتان
Text Size:
Buhtan is an Arabic term that refers to "slander" or "false accusation." In Islamic ethics, it is considered a much more severe sin than Ghibah (backbiting). While Ghibah involves saying something true behind someone's back that they would dislike, Buhtan involves spreading lies or fabricating stories to ruin a person's reputation. The Quran and Hadith strictly prohibit Buhtan, as it destroys social harmony and causes deep injustice to the victim. Forgiveness for Buhtan often requires not only repenting to Allah but also seeking the pardon of the person who was slandered and publicly correcting the false narrative. Buhtan (slander or false accusation) is among the gravest sins in Islam because it combines lying with harming another person's reputation. The Quran warns: "Indeed, those who accuse chaste, unaware, believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have a great punishment" (24:23). This verse was revealed regarding the false accusation against Aisha (RA), demonstrating the severity of this sin. Buhtan is worse than ghibah because ghibah, while sinful, is at least true. Buhtan is fabrication, creating something that did not happen. It is a form of lying, and lying is condemned as characteristic of hypocrites. The Prophet said: "Whoever makes a false accusation against a believer, Allah will place him in the Fire" (Tabarani). The damage of buhtan is immense. It can destroy marriages, end careers, ruin reputations, and break families. Unlike physical harm, which may heal, reputational harm can last a lifetime and affect generations. The victim of buhtan suffers not only the immediate harm but also the lasting suspicion of others. Buhtan is also a form of zulm (injustice) against the victim. The Prophet said: "Beware of injustice, for injustice will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection" (Bukhari, Muslim). The victim of slander will have the right to take the slanderer's good deeds on the Day of Judgment, and if the slanderer has no deeds left, they will take from the victim's sins. Repentance from buhtan requires: immediately stopping the slander; deeply regretting the act; resolving never to repeat it; and, crucially, taking steps to repair the damage. If the victim knows about the slander, the slanderer must seek their forgiveness and publicly clear their name. If the victim does not know, the slanderer should still pray for them and do good deeds on their behalf. The Prophet said: "Whoever has wronged his brother regarding his honor or anything else, let him seek his forgiveness today before there is no dinar or dirham" (Bukhari). In modern contexts, buhtan is rampant. Social media allows false accusations to spread instantly, often before the truth can emerge. The same principles apply: spreading unverified accusations, sharing rumors, or forwarding defamatory content is participating in buhtan. The believer must verify information before sharing, especially when it concerns others' reputations. The Quran instructs: "O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate" (49:6). This verse was revealed about verifying news before acting on it. The punishment for buhtan is severe in Islamic law. Those who falsely accuse others of adultery without four witnesses receive eighty lashes, and their testimony is rejected forever (24:4). This strict penalty demonstrates the seriousness with which Islam treats slander. The believer must guard their tongue, especially when it comes to others' reputations. The Prophet said: "The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand Muslims are safe" (Bukhari, Muslim). Buhtan violates this principle by causing harm with the tongue. The path to safety is to speak only what is known to be true, beneficial, and not harmful to others,or to remain silent.
