Fitrah

Text Size:
Fitrah refers to the "innate natural disposition" or "original purity" with which every human being is born. In Islamic theology, it is believed that every child is born with an inherent inclination toward monotheism and the recognition of their Creator. The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Every child is born upon the Fitrah, then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian." Living according to the Sharia is seen as a way of returning to and preserving this pure, natural state, aligning human behavior with the divine blueprint of existence. The concept of fitrah is central to Islamic anthropology. It explains why humans instinctively recognize right and wrong, feel awe at creation, and sense that there is a higher power. The fitrah is not lost but can be covered by environmental influences, false beliefs, and sinful habits. Islam is seen not as imposing something alien but as removing the veils that obscure what the soul already knows. The fitrah manifests in natural inclinations toward truth, beauty, goodness, and worship. It explains why the message of Islam resonates deeply with sincere seekers,it speaks to what is already present in their hearts. The fitrah also includes certain innate practices that align with natural human constitution. The Prophet enumerated five things from the fitrah: circumcision, removing pubic hair, trimming the mustache, clipping nails, and plucking armpit hair (Bukhari, Muslim). These practices maintain natural purity and are emphasized in Islamic tradition. The concept of fitrah has profound implications: it means that guidance is not imposed from outside but awakened from within. It gives hope that even those far from religion can return to their original nature. It also means that diversity in religious upbringing does not erase the fitrah; it only covers it. The call of Islam is a call back to what the soul already knows but may have forgotten, that there is only One Creator worthy of worship, and that living in harmony with His guidance brings true peace.
