Qust al-Hindi (Indian Costus) is a medicinal root mentioned in the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a remedy for various ailments. Costus (Saussurea costus or Saussurea lappa) is a perennial herb native to the Himalayan regions of India, Pakistan, and Kashmir, valued in traditional medicine systems including Unani and Ayurvedic medicine. The Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended it specifically for treating pleurisy (inflammation of the lung lining) and for children suffering from tonsillitis or throat infections. He said: "Treat your sick ones with Indian costus, for it contains seven cures, including a cure for pleurisy" (Bukhari and Muslim). He also advised using it as a snuff (inhalation) for throat infections and as a drink for pleurisy. The root contains anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties confirmed by modern research. It has been used traditionally for respiratory conditions, digestive disorders, skin diseases, and as an immune booster. In Islamic medicine, qust al-Hindi represents the prophetic guidance toward natural remedies that combine physical healing with spiritual blessings (barakah). Its mention in authentic Hadith elevates it beyond ordinary herbal medicine to a recommended sunnah. Muslims may use it in various forms,as powder for snuff, decoction for drinking, or paste for external application. The Prophet's recommendation demonstrates Islam's holistic approach to health, integrating spiritual practices with natural remedies while maintaining trust in Allah as the ultimate Healer (al-Shafi). Qust al-Hindi remains part of the prophetic medicine tradition, connecting Muslims to their heritage of holistic healing. For believers, qust al-Hindi is a sunnah remedy. They use it for respiratory and other ailments, following prophetic guidance, and trusting in Allah's healing. They combine it with modern medicine, seeking the barakah of following the sunnah.
