Liwajhillah literally translates to "For the Face of Allah." It is a Quranic expression used to describe the highest level of sincerity in charity and good deeds. When a person gives "Liwajhillah," they seek no thanks or recompense from the people they help; their only desire is the "Ridwan" (pleasure) of their Lord. The "Face of Allah" symbolizes His presence and His acceptance. This principle encourages Muslims to be selfless and anonymous in their generosity, fostering a society built on genuine compassion rather than social credit or public recognition. The phrase appears in the Quran in verses describing the highest level of charity: "But those who give their wealth seeking the Face of Allah and to strengthen themselves are like a garden on a hill" (2:265). "Seeking the Face of Allah" is the ultimate expression of sincerity. It means that the giver has no other motive, not praise, not influence, not reciprocity, only Allah's pleasure. The concept of seeking Allah's Face is mentioned repeatedly in the Quran. It is the motivation of the sincere believers who give charity secretly and openly, who spend in times of ease and hardship, and who seek only the reward of their Lord. The "Face of Allah" refers to His essence, His presence, His acceptance. When one does something Liwajhillah, they are seeking the honor of being in Allah's presence, of being accepted by Him. This is the highest aspiration. In practice, doing something Liwajhillah means giving without expectation of thanks. It means doing good deeds anonymously when possible. It means not reminding the recipient of the favor. The Prophet said that one of the seven who will be shaded by Allah on the Day of Judgment is the one who gives charity so secretly that the left hand does not know what the right hand gave. This is the spirit of Liwajhillah. Liwajhillah also cultivates humility. When one seeks only Allah's Face, they do not care who knows about their good deeds or who praises them. They are free from the desire for recognition. In a world where people often seek credit for their good deeds, Liwajhillah redirects the intention to the only One whose recognition matters. It ensures that charity is pure, that worship is sincere, and that the believer's deeds are for Allah alone. It is the highest level of sincerity and the key to acceptance in the Hereafter.
