Maktub literally means "it is written" and refers to the Islamic belief in "Qadar" or Divine Decree. It reflects the idea that everything that happens in the universe, from the movement of a leaf to the major events of human history, is known and recorded by Allah in the "Preserved Tablet" (Lauh al-Mahfuz) before it takes place. For a believer, the concept of Maktub provides immense psychological comfort during times of hardship, encouraging "Sabr" (patience) and the understanding that while humans have the freedom to choose, the ultimate outcome rests in the hands of the Creator. Belief in divine decree (qadar) is one of the six pillars of faith. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Belief in qadar, its good and its evil" (Muslim). This means believing that Allah has knowledge of all things, has recorded all things, wills all that occurs, and creates all things. Maktub does not negate human free will. People choose their actions, and Allah's knowledge encompasses those choices eternally. The Prophet said: "Work, for everyone is facilitated towards that for which he was created" (Bukhari, Muslim). This means that while Allah knows what people will choose, they are still responsible for their choices. The concept of maktub brings peace in hardship. When a believer faces difficulty, they know that it was written for them and that there is wisdom in it. They accept it with patience, trusting that Allah's wisdom is beyond their understanding. The Prophet said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer! All his affairs are good. If he experiences ease, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If he experiences hardship, he is patient, and that is good for him" (Muslim). Maktub also prevents arrogance in success. When a believer achieves something, they know that it was written for them and that it is a gift from Allah. They are grateful, not boastful. They recognize that their success is not solely due to their effort but to Allah's decree. For believers, maktub is not a reason for passivity. They strive, plan, and act, knowing that the outcome is in Allah's hands. The Prophet said: "Tie your camel and trust in Allah" (Tirmidhi). This means take the means, then trust the outcome to Allah. Maktub is a source of hope. The believer knows that what is written for them is what is best, even if they do not understand it. They trust in Allah's wisdom and mercy. The ultimate maktub is the decree of Paradise for the righteous, and the believer strives to be among them.
