Muqatta'at (Broken Letters) are unique combinations of Arabic letters (like Alif-Lam-Mim or Ya-Sin) that appear at the beginning of 29 surahs in the Quran. Their exact meaning is known only to Allah, though many scholars have offered interpretations. They serve to highlight the miraculous nature of the Quran, revealed in the very letters the Arabs used, yet impossible for them to imitate. Reciting them is an act of worship, and they evoke a sense of mystery and Divine authority at the start of a chapter. The Muqatta'at (disjointed or broken letters) are among the most fascinating features of the Quran. They appear at the beginning of 29 surahs, ranging from single letters (like "Sad" in Surah Sad, or "Nun" in Surah al-Qalam) to combinations of two, three, four, or five letters (like "Alif-Lam-Mim," "Ha-Mim," "Alif-Lam-Mim-Sad," "Alif-Lam-Mim-Ra," "Kaf-Ha-Ya-Ayn-Sad," "Ya-Sin," and "Ta-Ha"). The exact meaning of these letters is unknown. Scholars have offered various interpretations: they are names of the Quran; they are oaths (by the letters of the alphabet); they are intended to show that the Quran is composed of the same letters Arabs use, yet they cannot produce its like; they are symbols of the mystery of revelation; or their meaning is known only to Allah. The majority of scholars take the position that their precise meaning is known only to Allah (tafwid al-ma'na). The Muqatta'at appear only in Meccan surahs (with the exception of Surah al-Baqarah, which is Medinan). This suggests they relate to the challenge to the Arabs to produce something like the Quran. The Arabs were masters of language; the Quran challenged them to produce even a few verses like it. The Muqatta'at emphasize that the Quran, though composed of the same letters Arabs used daily, is inimitable. The Muqatta'at also serve a structural purpose. They often introduce surahs and separate them. Many scholars note that surahs beginning with Muqatta'at often emphasize the theme of revelation and the challenge of the Quran. For believers, the Muqatta'at are a reminder of the mystery of revelation. Not everything in the Quran is fully understood; some things are known only to Allah. This is a test of faith, will the believer accept what is beyond their understanding? The Muqatta'at also connect to the miraculous nature of the Quran. The Arabs, masters of eloquence, were challenged to produce something like it, and they could not. The Muqatta'at announce that challenge. Reciting the Muqatta'at is an act of worship. The Prophet recited them, and his companions recited them. They are part of the Quran, and reciting them brings reward. The Muqatta'at remind believers of the depth of the Quran, the mystery of revelation, and the certainty that Allah's words are beyond full human comprehension. They call to submission, accepting what Allah has revealed, even when its full meaning is hidden.
