Namimah

Namimah refers to "Tale-bearing" or "Gossip" intended to cause discord between people. It is considered a major sin in Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) warned that a person who engages in Namimah will not enter Paradise. Unlike "Ghibah" (backbiting), which is just speaking ill of someone, Namimah is specifically the act of carrying words from one person to another to destroy their relationship. It is viewed as a form of social "poison" that destroys families, friendships, and the unity of the Ummah. Namimah (tale-bearing or spreading discord) is the act of carrying information between people to create conflict. The Prophet said: "The talebearer will not enter Paradise" (Bukhari, Muslim). This severe warning reflects the destructive nature of namimah. While ghibah harms the reputation of one person, namimah harms relationships between people, destroying the bonds that hold families and communities together. Namimah can take many forms: telling one person what another said about them; reporting someone's harmless comment in a way that creates misunderstanding; exaggerating a disagreement to escalate conflict; or pretending to be helpful while actually sowing division. The talebearer often presents themselves as a concerned friend, saying "I'm only telling you this for your own good," while their true intention is to create discord. The Quran warns against namimah: "And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer, backbiter, spreader of slander" (68:10-11). The "spreader of slander" (namam) is condemned alongside the backbiter. Namimah is like poison in the community. One tale can destroy years of trust; one rumor can end a marriage; one manipulated word can break family bonds. The harm of namimah is often irreversible, as trust once broken is difficult to restore. The Prophet said: "Shall I not tell you what is better than fasting, prayer, and charity? Reconciling between people. For indeed, corruption between people is the shaver" (Abu Dawud). The "shaver" refers to how discord shaves away good deeds. Namimah, which causes corruption, is the opposite of reconciliation, which is highly rewarded. The talebearer harms three parties: themselves (by committing a major sin), the one they inform (by burdening them with suspicion and anger), and the one they speak about (by damaging their reputation and relationships). The cure for namimah includes: refusing to listen to gossip; when someone tries to share a tale, remind them of the prohibition; if one has engaged in namimah, they must repent and, if possible, repair the damage by reconciling the parties they divided. In modern contexts, namimah is amplified by social media and group chats. Screenshots of private conversations are shared, creating misunderstandings and conflicts. The anonymity of the internet can encourage people to spread tales without accountability. The believer must be especially careful: what is shared in confidence should remain confidential; interpreting others' words in the best possible light (husn al-dhann) prevents taking offense at tales; and if one hears something that might be true, they should address it directly with the person rather than accepting secondhand reports. The Prophet warned that the worst people are those who spread tales and cause division. The best are those who reconcile, conceal faults, and maintain unity. Namimah is a major sin that destroys communities. Avoiding it is essential for preserving the bonds of brotherhood that are central to Islam.
