Khimar is a specific type of headcovering mentioned in the Quran (Surah An-Nur), where women are instructed to draw their "Khumur" over their bosoms. Traditionally, it is a veil that covers the hair, neck, and shoulders, leaving the face clear. It is one of the fundamental components of the Hijab. While styles have changed over centuries and across different cultures, from simple scarves to more structured garments, the Khimar remains a symbol of a Muslim woman's commitment to modesty and her adherence to the Divine guidelines intended to protect her dignity and identity. The Quranic verse regarding the khimar states: "And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not to display their adornment except that which appears ordinarily thereof, and to draw their khumur (headcovers) over their bosoms" (24:31). This verse establishes the obligation for believing women to cover their hair, neck, and chest. The khimar is distinct from other forms of head covering such as the hijab (which can refer generally to modest dress) or the niqab (which covers the face). The khimar specifically refers to a headscarf that covers the hair, ears, neck, and chest, leaving the face exposed. It is worn by Muslim women as an expression of faith, obedience to Allah, and personal dignity. The khimar is not merely a cultural garment but a religious obligation derived from clear Quranic text. For women who wear it, the khimar represents their identity as Muslims, their submission to Allah's commands, and their commitment to modesty. It frees them from being judged by physical appearance and allows them to be valued for their character, intellect, and faith. The Prophet's wives and the early Muslim women wore the khimar, and their example is followed by believing women today. The khimar is a symbol of the dignity and honor that Islam accords to women. It is not a restriction but a liberation from the objectification and superficial standards of society. For believers, wearing the khimar is an act of worship, a means of seeking Allah's pleasure, and a way of following the example of the best of women, the wives of the Prophet and the female companions (RA).
