Nifaq

النفاق
Text Size:
Nifaq is "Hypocrisy." It is divided into two types: 1. Nifaq in Belief (outwardly Muslim, inwardly disbelieving), which leads to the lowest depths of Hell, and 2. Nifaq in Action (behaving like a hypocrite while still believing). The Prophet said the signs of a hypocrite are: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays. Muslims are encouraged to constantly check their hearts for "Nifaq" to ensure their worship is for Allah alone. Nifaq is considered one of the most dangerous spiritual diseases. The hypocrites (munafiqun) are mentioned frequently in the Quran, and Allah warns that they are in the lowest depths of the Fire. They are those who outwardly profess faith but inwardly disbelieve. The Quran describes them as "swaying between this and that, neither with these nor with those" (4:143). The lesser nifaq (nifaq al-amali) is hypocrisy in actions. A believer may have faith but exhibit hypocritical traits: lying, breaking promises, betraying trust. The Prophet warned that whoever has these traits is a pure hypocrite until they change, but one may have a mix of faith and hypocrisy. The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; when he is entrusted, he betrays. Even if a person prays, fasts, and claims to be Muslim, these traits indicate nifaq. Nifaq is dangerous because it is hidden. The believer may deceive others, but Allah knows what is in the hearts. The greatest danger is self-deception,believing one is sincere while the heart is corrupt. The cure for nifaq is sincerity (ikhlas). The believer must constantly check their intentions, ensuring that actions are for Allah alone, not for show. They must be truthful in speech, faithful to promises, and trustworthy with what is entrusted to them. The Prophet warned that the hypocrites will be called by a name on the Day of Judgment that will expose them. They will be barred from Paradise, while the sincere believers will enter. This is a severe warning to guard against hypocrisy. In daily life, Muslims are encouraged to examine their hearts, to ensure that their public and private selves align, and to seek refuge from nifaq. The Prophet would pray: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from hypocrisy." Nifaq reminds that faith is not just outward but inward. It calls believers to sincerity, truthfulness, and integrity,to be the same in private as in public, to serve Allah not for praise but for His pleasure alone. It is a warning against the spiritual disease that can destroy worship and lead to the worst of outcomes.
