Salafiyya

السلفية
Text Size:
Salafiyya is a reform movement within Sunni Islam that advocates for a return to the beliefs, practices, and methodology of the "Salaf al-Salih" (the Pious Predecessors)-the first three generations of Muslims: the Companions (Sahabah), their successors (Tabi'un), and the successors of the successors (Tabi' al-Tabi'in). The movement is based on the Prophetic statement: "The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them" (Bukhari and Muslim). Salafis emphasize following the Quran and Sunnah according to the understanding of these early generations, whom they consider the most authentic interpreters of Islam. In the modern context, Salafiyya emerged as a response to Western colonialism and what was perceived as stagnation and innovation (bid'ah) in the Muslim world. Key figures in the modern Salafi movement include Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi, Rashid Rida, and Muhammad 'Abduh (in his earlier works), who called for ijtihad (independent reasoning) and a return to original sources. Salafis generally reject blind imitation (taqlid) of the four schools of law, preferring direct engagement with Quran and Hadith. They emphasize tawhid (divine unity) in its three categories (rububiyyah, uluhiyyah, asma' wa sifat) and oppose practices they consider innovations, such as celebrating the Prophet's birthday (mawlid), seeking intercession through saints, and certain Sufi practices. The movement has diverse strands, ranging from quietist, scholarly Salafism focused on education and purification, to activist Salafism engaged in political reform, to more militant manifestations. Salafiyya has significantly influenced contemporary Islamic thought and practice, particularly in the Gulf, but also globally through the spread of Salafi scholars and institutions. For Muslims, Salafiyya represents an attempt to purify Islamic practice and return to authentic sources, though its methods and conclusions are debated among scholars. The movement's emphasis on textual study, rejection of innovation, and focus on creed (aqidah) has shaped Islamic discourse worldwide, while its critics argue that it sometimes overlooks the rich scholarly heritage of the later Islamic tradition.
