Shuhh (greed, avarice, miserliness) is a spiritual disease condemned in Islam as destructive to individual character and social harmony. The Quran warns against shuhh: "And whoever is protected from the stinginess (shuhh) of his soul,it is those who will be the successful" (64:16). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) identified shuhh as among the most destructive traits, stating: "Avoid shuhh, for it destroyed those before you, leading them to shed blood and sever family ties" (Muslim).
Shuhh manifests as excessive desire to acquire and hoard wealth, reluctance to fulfill financial obligations (zakat, supporting family), and constant dissatisfaction regardless of possessions. It differs from simple thriftiness, shuhh is pathological greed rooted in lack of trust in Allah's provision (tawakkul). It causes the individual to prioritize material accumulation over spiritual growth and community welfare.
Islamic teachings counter shuhh by emphasizing generosity (sadaqah), trusting Allah as the Provider (al-Razzaq), and remembering that wealth is merely a test. The Prophet (PBUH) taught that giving charity increases, not decreases, wealth. Overcoming shuhh requires cultivating gratitude (shukr), reflecting on death's reality, and practicing regular charity. Those freed from shuhh achieve true success, contentment in this life and reward in the next. Shuhh's opposite is generosity, reflecting divine attributes and building community solidarity.
