Tabligh

Text Size:
Tabligh (literally "to convey" or "deliver") refers to the duty of communicating the message of Islam to others. It encompasses both the obligation of scholars to properly transmit Islamic knowledge and the responsibility of every Muslim to share their faith according to their capacity. The Quran commands: "O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord" (5:67), establishing the principle of conveying divine guidance. Tabligh is also associated with the Tablighi Jamaat movement, founded in 1926 in India by Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi, which focuses on grassroots efforts to encourage Muslims to return to fundamental practices of faith-daily prayers, remembrance of Allah, respect for Muslims, and da'wah (inviting others). The movement emphasizes traveling in groups (khuruj) to visit mosques and communities, engaging in gentle reminder and personal example rather than confrontational preaching. Tablighi Jamaat avoids political involvement, focusing exclusively on spiritual renewal. Participants dedicate specific periods-three days, forty days, or four months annually-to this work. The movement has grown globally, particularly in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. Critics note its avoidance of political and social issues, while supporters value its emphasis on sincere practice and non-judgmental approach. Tabligh, in its broader sense, remains a vital Islamic concept: conveying Allah's message with wisdom, beautiful preaching, and exemplary character.
