Taqdeer (divine decree or predestination) is the sixth pillar of faith (iman) in Islam, affirming that Allah has full knowledge and control over everything that happens in the universe. Belief in taqdeer means accepting that Allah's knowledge encompasses all things, past, present, and future, and that nothing occurs except by His will and decree. The Quran states: "Indeed, all things We created with predestination (qadr)" (54:49). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explained taqdeer when asked about it: "Allah ordained the measures (maqadir) of creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth" (Muslim). Taqdeer includes four aspects: Allah's eternal knowledge of all things; His recording of all destinies in the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz); His will (mashi'ah) that nothing happens without His permission; and His creation of all things, including human actions. This does not negate human free will, people choose their actions, and Allah's knowledge encompasses those choices eternally. The Prophet clarified: "Work, for everyone is facilitated towards that for which he was created" (Bukhari and Muslim). Belief in taqdeer brings profound psychological peace, accepting that whatever happens, good or difficult, occurs by divine wisdom. It prevents despair in hardship and arrogance in success. However, taqdeer is not fatalism,Muslims strive, plan, and act, trusting outcomes to Allah while fully responsible for choices. Taqdeer balances divine sovereignty with human accountability, providing comfort without complacency. The concept of taqdeer is often misunderstood. Some think it means humans have no choice, but this contradicts the Quran's clear commands and warnings. The correct understanding is that Allah knows what people will choose, and He creates the framework within which choices operate, but humans are responsible for their choices. The Prophet said: "Allah said: 'I have created My servants as monotheists (hunafa), but the devils made them deviate'" (Muslim). This shows that while Allah created the potential for guidance, humans choose their path. Belief in taqdeer is tested in hardship. When tragedy strikes, the believer knows it is from Allah and accepts it with patience. When they succeed, they know it is from Allah and are grateful. This brings peace. The ultimate decree is on the Day of Judgment, when Allah will judge based on what people chose. The believer lives with trust in Allah's wisdom, responsibility for their choices, and hope in His mercy.
