Kalamullah, or the "Word of Allah," refers to the literal and eternal speech of God as revealed to His Prophets, with the Quran being the final and most complete manifestation. In Islamic theology (Aqidah), Kalamullah is one of the essential Attributes of Allah (SWT). It is not created; rather, it is a Divine Attribute that subsists in His Essence. The Quran is the literal speech of Allah in both its meanings and its specific Arabic wording, sent down to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the Archangel Jibreel (AS). This concept distinguishes the Quran from all other books, as it is seen as the direct communication from the Creator to His creation, providing the ultimate criteria (Furqan) for truth and falsehood.
Theologically, the belief in Kalamullah is a cornerstone of the Islamic creed. It means that when a believer recites the Quran, they are engaging with the actual Words of the Lord of the Worlds. This confers upon the Quran a level of sanctity and authority that is unmatched. The speech of Allah is a "Nur" (light) and a "Shifa" (healing) for the hearts of the believers. It is a guide that covers every aspect of life, from the most intricate legal rulings to the deepest spiritual aspirations. The nature of Kalamullah was a subject of significant debate among early Islamic schools, such as the Ash'aris and the Mu'tazilites, with the orthodox Sunni position affirming that Allah speaks with a Speech that is eternal and not resembling the speech of human beings. This attribute emphasizes Allah's "Iradah" (Will) and His "Hikmah" (Wisdom), as He chooses to speak and guide humanity through His words.
For the Ummah, the realization that the Quran is Kalamullah transforms the act of reading into an act of worship and intimate conversation with God. It requires a state of "Adab" (etiquette),including ritual purity (Wudu), humility, and a focused mind. The believer does not just "read" the Quran; they listen to the Divine Address. It fosters a deep sense of responsibility to uphold and live by the commands contained within those Words. By adhering to Kalamullah, the Muslim community remains anchored in a source of truth that is infallible and timeless. It provides a sense of peace (Sakina) and certainty (Yaqin), knowing that the Creator has not left humanity without a clear and living voice of guidance that transcends time and space.
