Zaytun (the olive) is a blessed fruit mentioned multiple times in the Quran, symbolizing light, blessing, and divine provision. The most significant reference appears in the Verse of Light (Ayat al-Nur): "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire" (24:35). This vivid imagery uses the olive's pure, abundant oil to illustrate divine light's quality. Allah also swears by the olive in Surah al-Tin: "By the fig and the olive, and [by] Mount Sinai, and [by] this secure city [Mecca]" (95:1-3)-oaths indicating these creations' profound significance. The olive tree symbolizes abundance, blessing, and connection to sacred lands-particularly Palestine and Syria, where olives have been cultivated for millennia. Its oil provides food, light, medicine, and anointing substance. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommended olive oil consumption and application, stating: "Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree" (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah). Traditional Islamic medicine values olives for various health benefits, confirmed by modern science (heart-healthy fats, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties). Zaytun reminds Muslims of Allah's abundant provision, the blessings of sacred lands, and the integration of physical nourishment with spiritual symbolism.
