Astaghfirullahal Adheem

أستغفر الله العظيم
Text Size:
Astaghfirullahal Adheem is an extended form of "Astaghfirullah," meaning "I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent." It is a powerful supplication (Du'a) and a form of Dhikr (remembrance) recited by Muslims to seek Allah's forgiveness for their sins and shortcomings. Reciting it regularly is believed to bring spiritual peace, increase sustenance (Rizq), and provide relief from hardship. This longer version emphasizes the greatness (Adheem) of the One from whom forgiveness is sought, deepening the sense of humility and reverence in the act of Istighfar. The phrase is often recited in full: "Astaghfirullah al-Adheem alladhi la ilaha illa huwal hayyul qayyumu wa atubu ilayh" (I seek forgiveness from Allah the Magnificent, besides whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I turn to Him in repentance). This complete form is considered one of the most comprehensive Istighfar formulas. Adding "al-Adheem" (the Magnificent) to Istighfar serves to remind the seeker of Allah's greatness, which has two implications. First, it inspires awe,one is seeking forgiveness from the Lord of the heavens and earth, which should be done with humility and reverence. Second, it inspires hope, the Magnificent is also the Forgiving, and His capacity to forgive is as vast as His greatness. Regular recitation of Astaghfirullahal Adheem is a practice of the righteous. The Prophet, though sinless, sought forgiveness over seventy times daily, teaching his followers the importance of constant repentance. The benefits of Istighfar are many: it removes the effects of sin, brings rain during drought, increases wealth and children, provides relief from distress, and opens doors of mercy. In times of difficulty, increasing Istighfar is a prophetic remedy. The extended form with "al-Adheem" deepens the impact, as the reciter reflects on the grandeur of the One they are addressing. This phrase also serves as a shield against despair. When sins feel overwhelming, remembering that the One being asked for forgiveness is al-Adheem,whose mercy encompasses all things, restores hope. Astaghfirullahal Adheem thus combines humility, hope, and trust, making it a comprehensive act of worship that cleanses the soul, strengthens faith, and draws the believer closer to Allah.
