Azrael, often referred to in Islamic tradition as Malak al-Mawt (the Angel of Death), is the archangel responsible for separating the soul from the body at the time of death. While the name "Azrael" is common in cultural tradition, the Quran refers to him by his title. He is a noble servant of Allah who acts only upon the divine command. He does not take a soul a second before or after its appointed time. For the righteous, he is said to appear in a beautiful form, while for the wicked, his appearance is terrifying, reflecting the state of the soul. The Quran mentions the Angel of Death: "Say, 'The angel of death who has been entrusted with you will take you, then to your Lord you will be returned'" (32:11). This verse establishes that there is a specific angel entrusted with taking souls, though it does not name him. In tradition, he is called Azrael, though scholars differ on whether this name is from revelation or later tradition. Azrael has assistants who help him take souls. The Prophet said: "The Angel of Death has assistants who pull the soul out of the body like a skewer through wet wool" (Ahmad). For the righteous, the process is gentle; for the wicked, it is painful. The soul is extracted from the body, and then the angels of mercy or punishment take it. Azrael acts only by Allah's command. He does not take a soul before its appointed time, nor does he delay. The Prophet said: "When the time of death approaches, the Angel of Death comes to the person and looks at him. If he is among the people of Paradise, he appears in a beautiful form; if he is among the people of Hell, he appears in a terrifying form" (Ahmad). For believers, the Angel of Death is a reminder of the certainty of death. They know that every soul will taste death, and that the angel will come at the appointed time. They prepare for that meeting by living righteously, so that when Azrael appears, he appears in a beautiful form, and the soul is taken gently. The believer does not fear death but prepares for it. They seek Allah's mercy and forgiveness, knowing that the state in which they die will determine how the Angel of Death appears and how the soul is taken. The Prophet taught that the best death is to be in a state of faith, with the last words being the Shahada. For believers, Azrael is a servant of Allah, not an object of fear. They trust that Allah's mercy will be with them at the time of death, and they prepare for that moment by living a life of faith, righteousness, and constant repentance.
