Hisab

Hisab refers to the "Accountability" or "Reckoning" on the Day of Judgment. Every human being will be presented with a "Kitab" (record) of their deeds, which has been meticulously kept by the angels. Allah will judge each individual with perfect justice, where even an atom's weight of good or evil will be accounted for. The concept of Hisab serves as a powerful moral compass in the life of a Muslim, encouraging them to engage in "Muhasabah" (self-reflection) daily, judging their own actions before they are judged by the Creator on that final day. The Quran describes Hisab in detail: "We will set up the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be wronged at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant" (21:47). This verse emphasizes that the reckoning is perfectly just. The record of deeds (kitab) is kept by the angels Raqib and Atid. The righteous will receive their book in their right hand, and the wicked in their left or behind their back. The Prophet (peace be upon him) described the reckoning: "There is no one who will not be addressed by Allah on the Day of Judgment without a translator between them" (Bukhari). The questioning will be comprehensive: about life, youth, wealth, knowledge, and deeds. Hisab is a pillar of faith (iman),belief in the Day of Judgment is one of the six articles of faith. This belief shapes the believer's life: they know that every action has consequences, that justice will ultimately be served, and that they will be held accountable. The concept of Hisab also includes muhasabah (self-accountability). Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) said: "Hold yourselves accountable before you are held accountable, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you." This daily self-reflection is the practice of the righteous. For believers, Hisab is both warning and hope. It warns against sin, for nothing is hidden. It gives hope to the oppressed, for justice will come. It motivates good deeds, for every good is recorded. The ultimate reckoning is for the believer to enter Paradise, where there is no fear, no grief, no punishment,only the pleasure of Allah. The believer lives with the awareness of Hisab, striving to fill their record with deeds that will please Allah, and trusting in His mercy to forgive their shortcomings.
