Illiyin is a term mentioned in the Quran (Surah al-Mutaffifin) referring to a "Register" or a "High Place" where the records of the righteous are kept. It is described as a "written book witnessed by those brought near to Allah." Scholars interpret Illiyin as either a physical location in the highest heavens or a spiritual state of being for the souls of the believers after death. It represents the ultimate success and honor, contrasted with "Sijjin," the record of the wicked. To have one's name in Illiyin is the goal of every striving Muslim. The Quran says: "No indeed! The record of the righteous is in 'Illiyin. And what can make you know what is 'Illiyin? It is a written record witnessed by those brought near [to Allah]" (83:18-21). Illiyin is the elevated station of the righteous. It is the highest place, opposite to Sijjin, the lowest depths. Those who are righteous, who give charity, pray, and believe, will have their record in Illiyin. They will be witnessed by the angels brought near to Allah, indicating the honor of their station. The term Illiyin comes from the root "ala," meaning high or exalted. It is the plural of "illiyun," meaning the highest. Scholars interpret Illiyin as a register in the seventh heaven, or a place in the highest heavens where the souls of the righteous reside. Some say it is the highest part of Paradise. The record in Illiyin is not just a register of deeds but also the place of the righteous. Their deeds are recorded, and their souls are elevated. The concept of Illiyin gives hope to believers. It assures them that their good deeds are recorded, that they are witnessed by the angels, and that their final destination is the highest station. Illiyin encourages striving for excellence. The goal is not just to avoid sin but to attain the highest station. This requires not just fulfilling obligations but going beyond, doing good deeds with sincerity, and seeking closeness to Allah. Illiyin reminds that the righteous are honored by Allah. Their deeds are witnessed, their station is elevated, and their reward is the highest. It calls believers to strive for excellence, to do good deeds with sincerity, and to seek the highest stations in Paradise.
