Jabal al-Rahmah, or the "Mount of Mercy," is a small granite hill located on the Plain of Arafat. It holds immense historical and spiritual significance, as it is where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered his "Farewell Sermon" during his final Hajj. In this sermon, he established the principles of human rights, equality, and the completion of the Islamic message. It is also traditionally believed to be the place where Adam and Eve were reunited on earth. During the Hajj, millions of pilgrims gather around this mount on the Day of Arafat to pray for forgiveness and mercy. Jabal al-Rahmah (Mount of Mercy) is located on the Plain of Arafat, about 20 kilometers east of Mecca. It stands approximately 70 meters high and is the site where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delivered his Farewell Sermon during his final pilgrimage in 10 AH (632 CE). The sermon, which he delivered from a camel, summarized the core teachings of Islam: the sanctity of life and property, the prohibition of interest (riba), the rights of women, the equality of all believers, and the obligation to adhere to the Quran and Sunnah. It was also where the final revelation was revealed: "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion" (5:3). The plain of Arafat itself is known as the Mount of Mercy, and the standing (wuquf) there on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah is the most essential rite of Hajj. The Prophet said: "Hajj is Arafat" (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi), meaning that without standing at Arafat, Hajj is invalid. On this day, millions of pilgrims gather, standing from noon until sunset, engaged in prayer, supplication, and seeking forgiveness. It is a day of immense mercy,the Prophet said that no day has more people freed from Hellfire than the Day of Arafat (Muslim). The mountain is also traditionally believed to be where Adam and Eve were reunited after being sent down from Paradise, giving it the name "Mount of Mercy." Whether this tradition is historically verified or not, the mountain's name reflects the immense mercy that descends on this day. For pilgrims, Jabal al-Rahmah represents the climax of the Hajj journey,a day of standing before Allah, acknowledging human frailty, and seeking His boundless mercy. It is a foretaste of the Day of Judgment, when all humanity will stand before their Creator. The mountain reminds all Muslims that Allah's mercy encompasses all things and that sincere repentance on this day is accepted, sins are forgiven, and the pilgrim emerges purified.
