Itikaf is the spiritual practice of retreating to a mosque for a specific period to focus entirely on the worship of Allah. It is most commonly performed during the last ten nights of Ramadan, following the example of the Prophet (PBUH) as a way to seek "Laylat al-Qadr" (the Night of Power). During Itikaf, the worshipper detaches from worldly affairs, spending time in prayer, Quranic recitation, and "Dhikr" (remembrance). It is a profound exercise in self-discipline and soul-purification, aimed at renewing one's spiritual energy and deepening the bond with the Divine. The practice of Itikaf requires the individual to stay within the mosque boundaries, leaving only for absolute necessities. The core of Itikaf is "Niyyah" (intention) and maintaining a state of ritual purity. It provides a unique opportunity for intense self-reflection (Muhasabah) and seeking forgiveness in a peaceful, sacred environment. By temporarily leaving behind the distractions of social media, work, and family, the believer can focus on the ultimate purpose of life: the sincere service and love of Allah, returning to daily life with a clearer heart and stronger faith. Itikaf can be performed at any time, but it is most emphasized in Ramadan's last ten days. The Prophet performed itikaf consistently during these days, sometimes extending to twenty days in his final year. It is sunnah mu'akkadah (emphasized sunnah) for those who can manage it without neglecting family obligations. During itikaf, permissible activities include performing obligatory prayers, voluntary prayers, Quran recitation, making du'a, studying Islamic knowledge, and engaging in dhikr. Conversations should be minimal and focused on worship. The itikaf experience breaks routine, creating space for spiritual growth that might not be possible in daily life. It cultivates detachment from worldly concerns, patience, and deep reflection on one's relationship with Allah. Many find itikaf transformative,a spiritual retreat that reorients priorities and strengthens faith for the months ahead.
