Yawm Al-Tarwiyah

يوم التروية
Text Size:
Yawm al-Tarwiyah (the Day of Watering) is the 8th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the first day of the Hajj pilgrimage. Its name derives from the historical practice when pilgrims would water their animals and store water for the upcoming days in the arid plain of Arafat. On this day, pilgrims enter the state of ihram (ritual consecration) if they haven't already, and travel from Mecca to the tent city of Mina, where they spend the day and night in prayer and preparation. In Mina, pilgrims pray the shortened (qasr) prayers-Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr-without combining them, following the Prophet's (peace be upon him) example. The day serves as spiritual preparation for the climax of Hajj at Arafat, allowing pilgrims to mentally and physically ready themselves for the intense worship ahead. Yawm al-Tarwiyah embodies the gradual intensification of the Hajj experience-moving from the ordinary world into complete consecration, from Mecca's sanctuary to Mina's anticipation, preparing hearts for the supreme moment of standing before Allah at Arafat. For pilgrims, this day represents the transition from intention to action, from planning to immersion in sacred rites. It reminds all Muslims that spiritual journeys require preparation, that approaching Allah demands gradual purification, and that the most profound worship often follows periods of readiness and anticipation.
