Jahannam is the Arabic name for "Hell" or the "Fire". It is described in the Quran as a place of punishment and purification for those who rejected the truth and committed injustice. It has different levels and names (like Saqar and Hutamah) corresponding to the nature of one's deeds. While it is a place of terror, Islam teaches that many believers will eventually be removed from it after being purified, through the mercy of Allah and intercession. The Quran describes Jahannam with vivid imagery: blazing fire, boiling water, burning winds, and scorching heat. Its inhabitants wear garments of fire and drink boiling water that cuts their intestines. Their skin is constantly renewed to feel fresh torment, and they cry out for relief that never comes. Jahannam has seven gates, each assigned to different categories of wrongdoers. It is guarded by stern and powerful angels, and its fuel is people and stones. The fire of Jahannam is 70 times more intense than worldly fire. Among those warned of its punishment are disbelievers, hypocrites, oppressors, murderers, and those who consumed unjust wealth. The Quran constantly reminds believers of Jahannam to encourage righteousness, warn against sin, and emphasize the gravity of choices in this life. However, Allah's mercy is vast, sincere repentance can avert its punishment, and Allah forgives all sins for those who turn back to Him before death.
