Mawa (or Jannat al-Ma’wa) is one of the names of Paradise mentioned in the Quran, often translated as the "Garden of Abode" or the "Garden of Refuge." It is described as being near the "Sidrat al-Muntaha" (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary). It is a place of eternal security and rest for those who feared standing before their Lord and restrained their souls from base desires, representing the ultimate sanctuary for the righteous. The name Mawa comes from the root "awa," meaning to return, to take refuge, or to dwell. Jannat al-Mawa is the Garden of Refuge, the place where the righteous will return and find eternal security. The Quran mentions it: "And they had been guided to the good word, and they had been guided to the path of the Praiseworthy. Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and pleasure, enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord protected them from the punishment of Hellfire. [They will be told], 'Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do.' They will recline on couches arranged in rows, and We will marry them to fair women with large, beautiful eyes. And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith,We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained. And We will provide them with fruit and meat from whatever they desire. They will exchange with one another a cup [of wine] wherein is no ill speech nor commission of sin. And they will be served by youths of perpetual [freshness] as if they were pearls well-protected. They will approach one another, questioning each other. They will say, 'Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful [of displeasing Allah]. So Allah conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire'" (52:21-27). This passage describes Jannat al-Mawa as a place of reward for those who feared Allah in this life. The Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary) is the tree in the seventh heaven that marks the boundary of what the angels and creation can pass. Jannat al-Mawa is near it, indicating its high status. Mawa represents the ultimate security. The righteous, who feared Allah in this life, are given eternal security in the next. They are protected from fear, from grief, and from the Fire. They dwell in gardens, enjoy pure companionship, and receive the pleasure of Allah. Mawa reminds that the reward for righteous living is eternal security and peace. It calls believers to fear Allah, to restrain their souls from base desires, and to seek the ultimate refuge in the Gardens of Abode.
