Mabrook

مبروك
Text Size:
Mabrook is a common Arabic greeting meaning "Congratulations" or "Blessed." It is derived from the word "Barakah" (divine blessing). When a Muslim says "Mabrook" to someone who has achieved a milestone, such as a graduation, a new job, or a marriage, they are not just offering a social compliment; they are asking Allah to place "Barakah" in that new situation. It is an expression of "Ghibtah" (positive emulation),feeling joy for the success of others without any jealousy, which is a sign of a healthy and spiritually sound heart. The word "Mabrook" comes from the root "barakah" (blessing). It is a passive participle meaning "blessed" or "may it be blessed." When one says Mabrook, they are saying: "May this be blessed," "May Allah place blessing in this," "Congratulations, and may it bring blessing." The distinction between "Mabrook" and "Congratulations" is significant. "Congratulations" focuses on the achievement; "Mabrook" focuses on the blessing. It acknowledges that the achievement is from Allah and asks that it be filled with barakah, growth, goodness, and permanence. Saying Mabrook to someone who has achieved something reflects the Islamic value of ghibtah (positive envy),feeling joy for another's success without wishing it away. The Prophet said that ghibtah is allowed in two cases: for someone given knowledge and acts upon it, and for someone given wealth and spends it in charity. Saying Mabrook is an expression of this positive feeling. In various milestones, marriage, new home, new job, graduation, birth of a child,Mabrook is the appropriate response. It congratulates while also acknowledging that true success is not just the achievement but the blessing that Allah places in it. For the one receiving Mabrook, it is a reminder to be grateful and to seek Allah's blessing in their new situation. It is also a protection against the evil eye, as acknowledging that all blessings come from Allah wards off envy. In a world where people often congratulate without deeper meaning, Mabrook restores the Islamic practice of congratulating with blessing. It reminds that all achievements are from Allah, that the goal is not just success but blessed success, and that rejoicing for others is a sign of faith. The simple word Mabrook transforms congratulations from a social formality into a prayer for blessing and a celebration of Allah's favor.
