Karamah (plural: Karamat) refers to a "Miracle" or "Wonder" performed by Allah at the hands of a Wali (Friend of Allah). Unlike the "Mu'jizah" of a Prophet, which is used to prove their messengership, a Karamah is a sign of Allah's favor and honor for a righteous person. It is not something the person "owns" or controls, but a gift from the Divine meant to strengthen faith or assist the community in a time of need. Karamah are extraordinary events that occur at the hands of righteous believers. They are not proof of prophethood but are signs of Allah's favor. Throughout Islamic history, many saints (awliya) are reported to have experienced Karamat, such as walking on water, traveling long distances in short times, or having prayers instantly answered. The difference between Karamah and Mu'jizah (prophetic miracle) is significant. Mu'jizah is a miracle that confirms prophethood and is given only to prophets. Karamah is a sign of Allah's favor to a righteous believer and is not proof of prophethood. Karamah are not a requirement for sainthood. Many saints had no Karamat. The true miracle is the saint's piety, sincerity, and closeness to Allah. Karamah can be a test. If a person becomes proud because of a Karamah, they may fall from grace. True saints do not seek Karamah and are not attached to them. The Quran mentions Karamah: "Every time Zechariah entered the sanctuary to her, he found her supplied with provisions. He said, 'O Mary, from where is this?' She said, 'It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account'" (3:37). The provision Mary received was a Karamah. Karamah remind that Allah is not limited by natural laws. He can do whatever He wills for whomever He wills. They are signs of His power and mercy. For believers, Karamah should not be the focus of faith. The focus should be on following the Sharia and purifying the heart. Karamah, if they occur, are gifts from Allah, but they are not the goal of the spiritual path. Karamah remind that Allah's power is limitless, and that He honors His righteous servants. They call to humility, recognizing that any extraordinary occurrence is from Allah, not from oneself. They also call to focus on what is truly important: sincerity, piety, and closeness to Allah, not the seeking of signs and wonders.
