Khamr is the Arabic term for intoxicants, particularly wine or any substance that clouds the mind and causes a loss of self-control. Islam strictly prohibits the consumption, production, and sale of Khamr. The Quranic prohibition was revealed in stages, eventually leading to a total ban because intoxicants are viewed as the "mother of all evils," leading to social harm, domestic violence, and spiritual neglect. The prohibition is intended to preserve the five "Maqasid al-Sharia": life, intellect, religion, property, and lineage, ensuring that individuals remain responsible and conscious in their actions. The prohibition of khamr came in stages. First, the Quran acknowledged that there is sin and some benefit in intoxicants, but the sin is greater than the benefit (2:219). Then, believers were forbidden to pray while intoxicated (4:43). Finally, a complete prohibition was revealed: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants (khamr), gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful" (5:90). Khamr includes all intoxicants, not just wine. The Prophet said: "Every intoxicant is khamr, and every intoxicant is forbidden" (Muslim). This includes beer, whiskey, vodka, and any substance that clouds the mind, including drugs. The prohibition extends to all aspects of khamr: consuming, producing, selling, carrying, serving, and even buying for others. The Prophet cursed ten people related to khamr: the one who presses it, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who pays for it, and the one who consumes its price (Abu Dawud). Khamr is called the "mother of all evils" because it leads to other sins. It clouds judgment, leads to violence, destroys families, and wastes wealth. For believers, khamr is strictly forbidden. They avoid it completely, not even coming near it. They protect their intellect, which is a gift from Allah, and use it to worship Him. They trust that Allah's prohibition is for their benefit, protecting them from harm. The ultimate goal is to remain conscious of Allah, and khamr is the enemy of that consciousness.
