A Mustafti is a "seeker of a Fatwa",an individual who approaches a qualified scholar (Mufti) to request a legal or spiritual ruling regarding a specific issue in their life. The role of the Mustafti is central to the dynamic application of Islamic law, as they provide the real-world "context" that requires the "Ijtihad" (independent reasoning) of the scholar. In the Islamic tradition, seeking a ruling is an act of "Ilm" (knowledge) and "Taqwa" (God-consciousness), reflecting the believer’s desire to ensure that their actions are in accordance with the pleasure of Allah (SWT).
Theologically, the interaction between the Mustafti and the Mufti is a manifestation of the Quranic command: "So ask the people of the message if you do not know" (Surah An-Nahl 16:43). It teaches the believer that while everyone is responsible for their own faith, the community is an integrated body where those with less knowledge seek guidance from those with more. The Mustafti must possess the "Adab" (etiquette) of the seeker, being sincere in their question, truthful in providing the facts, and humble in receiving the answer. This relationship fosters a culture of "Nasiha" (sincerity/advice) and mutual respect. The "Shariah" provides the Mustafti with "Sakina" (tranquility) and "Yaqin" (certainty) by offering a clear path through the "Mashuq" (doubts) of daily life. This process ensures that the "Deen" remains relevant and transformative for the individual, guiding them toward "Falah" (success) through the "Bayan" (clear explanation) of the law. It reflects the "Hikmah" (wisdom) of the Divine system in providing a scholarly mechanism for personal and communal guidance. By being an active Mustafti, the believer demonstrates their "Ikhlas" (sincerity) and their commitment to the "Sirat al-Mustaqim."
For the Ummah, the concept of the Mustafti is essential for maintaining the intellectual and spiritual vitality of the community. It teaches the believers the value of "authority" and the importance of "expert guidance" in the religion. In a modern context, where information is abundant but wisdom is rare, the traditional role of the Mustafti is a revolutionary force for clarity and stability. It encourages a culture of "Ilm" and responsible inquiry. By honoring the relationship between the seeker and the scholar, the Muslim community ensures that its actions are rooted in the authentic "Sunnah." It promotes a life of responsibility and shared wisdom. The Mustafti remains a vital part of the Islamic landscape, guiding the believers toward the ultimate success of a life lived with integrity and Divine approval.
