Jahl means "Ignorance" or the lack of knowledge. In Islam, Jahl is classified into two types: "Jahl Basit" (simple ignorance), where one knows they don't know, and "Jahl Murakkab" (complex ignorance), where one is ignorant but believes they are knowledgeable. Islam strongly opposes Jahl by making the seeking of knowledge an obligation for every Muslim. Ignorance is seen as the root of evil, superstition, and social injustice.

The Quran says: "Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only those of understanding will remember" (39:9). Simple ignorance is curable, as the person seeks knowledge. Complex ignorance is the most dangerous type because the person does not seek knowledge, thinking they already have it. The Prophet said: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim" (Ibn Majah). This makes the pursuit of knowledge a religious duty, not merely a personal choice.

Ignorance of Islam leads to innovation (bid'ah), extremism, and misinterpretation of texts. In pre-Islamic Arabia, the era of ignorance (jahiliyyah) was characterized by tribal warfare and social injustice. Islam came to replace this with knowledge, justice, and mercy. The Prophet said: "The scholars are the heirs of the prophets" (Abu Dawud), showing that preserving and transmitting knowledge is a sacred duty.

In modern times, jahl manifests as relying on unqualified sources for religious guidance. Muslims are called to be lifelong learners. Knowledge deepens faith and increases consciousness of Allah: "Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge" (35:28). All beneficial knowledge is praiseworthy, from religious sciences to medicine and mathematics. The path of Islam is the path of knowledge, from the first revelation "Read!" to the final command to seek increase in knowledge.
