Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is one of the four "Sacred Months" (Al-Ashhur al-Hurum) in which fighting is strictly forbidden. The name itself is derived from the word "Haram," meaning forbidden or sacred. It is a month of great historical and spiritual significance. The 10th of Muharram is known as Day of Ashura, marking the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Israelites from Pharaoh. For many, it is a time of fasting, reflection, and honoring the sacrifices made for the sake of truth and justice in the early history of Islam. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year. It is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred" (9:36). The sacred months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qi'dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah. In Muharram, fighting was prohibited in pre-Islamic Arabia, and Islam confirmed this prohibition, emphasizing peace and reflection during this time. The 10th of Muharram, Ashura, has special significance. The Prophet fasted on this day in Mecca, and when he migrated to Medina and found the Jews fasting in gratitude for Musa's salvation, he said, "We are closer to Musa than you," and he fasted and commanded fasting on this day. Later, fasting in Ramadan became obligatory, and fasting on Ashura became recommended (mustahabb). The Prophet said that fasting on Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year. For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the Prophet's grandson, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. This event represents the stand against tyranny and the sacrifice for truth. For all Muslims, it is a day of reflection on courage, sacrifice, and the principles for which Hussain stood. Muharram is also a time for increased worship. The Prophet said that the best fast after Ramadan is in the month of Muharram. Fasting on the 9th and 10th, or the 10th and 11th, is recommended to distinguish from Jewish practice. In modern times, Muharram is a time for Muslims to reflect on the new year. Unlike secular New Year celebrations, the Islamic New Year is a time for solemn reflection, not celebration. It is an opportunity to evaluate one's life, to renew commitment to faith, and to remember the Hijrah (migration) of the Prophet, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Muharram reminds Muslims that time is sacred, that certain times are blessed, and that the new year should begin with reflection, worship, and a commitment to live according to Allah's guidance. It is a month of peace, fasting, and remembrance of the prophets and their sacrifices for the sake of truth.
