Rifq

Text Size:
Rifq means "Gentleness" or "Kindness." The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Allah is gentle and He loves gentleness in all matters." Rifq is considered the "beauty" of a person's character; when it is present in a thing, it beautifies it, and when it is removed, it disgraces it. In the Islamic worldview, gentleness is a more powerful tool for change and guidance than harshness. In the context of "Dawah" and leadership, Rifq is an essential quality. The Quran commands even Prophet Musa (AS) to speak "leniently" (Qawlan Layyinan) to Pharaoh. For a Muslim, practicing Rifq means being soft-hearted, easy-going, and compassionate towards family, animals, and even those who oppose them, mirroring the character of the Messenger (PBUH). The Prophet said: "Gentleness is not found in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything except that it disgraces it" (Muslim). Gentleness is a sign of faith. The Prophet said: "Whoever is deprived of gentleness is deprived of all good" (Muslim). Gentleness is effective. The Prophet was gentle, and people were drawn to him. The Quran says: "If you had been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you" (3:159). Gentleness is not weakness. It is strength under control. The Prophet was gentle, yet firm in truth. He never used harshness when gentleness would suffice. Gentleness applies to all relationships: with family, with neighbors, with animals, and even with enemies. The Prophet said: "Be kind to those on earth, and the One in heaven will be kind to you" (Tirmidhi). For believers, rifq is a quality to embody. They are gentle in speech, gentle in action, gentle in dealings. They know that Allah is gentle and loves gentleness. The ultimate gentleness is shown on the Day of Judgment, when the believers are greeted with peace and gentleness by the angels. The believer strives to be gentle, reflecting the character of the Prophet, who was sent as a mercy to the worlds.
