Sadaqah (Voluntary Charity) is an act of giving that goes beyond the obligatory Zakat. It comes from the root word "Sidq" (truth), implying that charity is a "proof" of the sincerity of one's faith. Sadaqah is not limited to money; the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that "even a smile is Sadaqah". It can be helping a neighbor, teaching knowledge, or removing a harm from the road. The most beloved form is "Sadaqah Jariyah" (ongoing charity), such as building a well or a school, which continues to provide rewards even after the giver has passed away. Sadaqah is a means of extinguishing sins "as water extinguishes fire" and bringing blessing to one's remaining wealth. The Quran praises those who give charity secretly and openly, emphasizing that charity does not decrease wealth but rather increases it in blessing. Sadaqah can be given at any time and in any amount, though the Prophet encouraged giving even a small amount consistently. It protects the giver from calamity, increases provision, and is a means of healing illness. Giving charity also purifies the heart from greed and selfishness, cultivating generosity and compassion. Sadaqah Jariyah includes building mosques, schools, hospitals, water wells, printing beneficial books, planting trees, or even teaching a person a skill they use to benefit others. The Prophet taught that when a person dies, their deeds cease except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge they left behind, or a righteous child who prays for them. Sadaqah thus connects believers to lasting impact that transcends their own lifetime.
