Sidq

Text Size:
Sidq (Truthfulness) is one of the "mother virtues" in Islamic ethics. It is not limited to telling the truth with the tongue; it includes "Sidq of the Heart" (sincerity of intention) and "Sidq of Action" (ensuring one's deeds match one's words). The Prophet (peace be upon him) was known as "Al-Amin" (The Trustworthy) and "As-Sadiq" (The Truthful) even before his Prophethood. He taught that "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise." A person who is consistently truthful is recorded with Allah as a "Siddiq." In a society, Sidq is the "social glue" that builds trust, stability, and integrity, while its opposite, "Kidhb" (lying), is the root of hypocrisy and social decay. Sidq is a comprehensive virtue. It includes truthfulness in speech: saying what is true; truthfulness in intention: sincerity (ikhlas) in worship; truthfulness in promise: keeping commitments; truthfulness in character: being the same in public and private; and truthfulness in deeds: actions matching words. The Quran commands: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful (as-sadiqin)" (9:119). The truthful are praised; the liars are condemned. The Prophet said: "Truthfulness leads to righteousness (birr), and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to be truthful until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person. Lying leads to wickedness (fujur), and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man continues to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar" (Bukhari, Muslim). Truthfulness is the foundation of faith. Without truthfulness, faith is incomplete. The hypocrites are described as liars because they say what they do not believe. Truthfulness also includes being true to one's commitments. The Prophet said: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; when he is entrusted, he betrays" (Bukhari, Muslim). For believers, truthfulness is a core virtue. They strive to be truthful in all matters, with Allah, with themselves, and with others. They know that truthfulness leads to righteousness and Paradise. The ultimate truthfulness is being true to the covenant with Allah, living as one believes, and dying as one lived. The believer seeks to be among the truthful (siddiqin), the highest rank after the prophets.
