Al-Mudhill

Al-Mudhill (The Humiliator) is the Name of Allah signifying that He is the One who lowers the status of the arrogant, the "Zalimeen" (oppressors), and those who turn away from His guidance. This is the counterpart to "Al-Mu'izz" (The Bestower of Honor). For the "Ummah," this Name serves as a powerful "Tadhkirah" (reminder) to avoid "Kibr" (pride). It teaches the believer that worldly power is a "Fitna" (trial) and that those who use it to disobey Allah will eventually face "Dhillah" (disgrace) in both this life and the "Akhirah." Al-Mudhill (The Humiliator) is the Name of Allah signifying that He brings "Dhilla" (disgrace and lowliness) to those who are arrogant and those who persistently disobey Him. This attribute is the necessary balance to "Al-Mu'izz." It is a warning to the "Zalimun" (oppressors) that their power is temporary and that Al-Mudhill can strip them of their "Jah" (prestige) in an instant. For the believer, it is a reminder to remain humble, fearing the "Adhab" (punishment) of being lowered by the Almighty. The Name Al-Mudhill appears in the Quran: "You honor whom You will and humiliate (tudhillu) whom You will" (3:26). This establishes that humiliation, like honor, comes from Allah. Understanding Al-Mudhill warns the arrogant. Those who look down on others, who oppress the weak, who boast of their status,they are reminded that Al-Mudhill can bring them low. The Prophet said: "Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah will raise him; whoever is arrogant, Allah will lower him" (Ahmad). Al-Mudhill also comforts the oppressed. When they see tyrants prosper, they know that Al-Mudhill will eventually humiliate them. The Quran says: "And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to mock" (39:48). The Name also calls believers to humility. They should not look down on others, not feel superior because of wealth, status, or even piety. The Prophet said: "Do not say that I am better than so-and-so" (Muslim). The ultimate humiliation is on the Day of Judgment, when Al-Mudhill will lower the arrogant to the lowest depths of Hell. The believer lives in humility, seeking the exaltation that comes from Al-Mu'izz, and fearing the humiliation that comes from Al-Mudhill.
