Al-Quddus (The Pure One) is a Divine Name that highlights Allah's transcendence above all worldly limitations and imperfections. For the "Mu'min," this Name inspires a sense of "Awe" and "Haya" (modesty). It reminds the "Ummah" that because Allah is the Most Holy, His "Din" (religion) and His "Buyut" (houses/mosques) must be treated with the utmost respect. It encourages the believer to purify their heart from "Shirq" (polytheism) and "Riya" (showing off) to truly draw closer to Al-Quddus. Al-Quddus (The Most Holy/Pure) is the Name of Allah signifying that He is absolutely free from any "Naqs" (defect), error, or resemblance to His creation. He is the source of all "Taharah" (purity). For the "Ummah," this Name is a call to "Tazkiyah" (purification of the soul). It teaches the believer to strive for purity in their "Amal" (deeds) and "Akhlaq" (character), seeking to honor the sanctity of the Creator by living a life of "Ihsan" (excellence) and devotion. The Name Al-Quddus appears in Surah al-Hashr: "He is Allah, besides whom there is no deity; the King, the Pure (Al-Quddus)" (59:23). This Name emphasizes Allah's absolute transcendence. He is free from any imperfection, deficiency, or need. He is above human attributes, above being limited by time or space, above having partners or children. The angels glorify Allah as Al-Quddus. The Prophet taught that the best supplication is to glorify Allah as Al-Quddus. The Name calls believers to purity. Just as Allah is pure, believers are commanded to purify themselves, physically, spiritually, and morally. The Prophet said: "Purity is half of faith" (Muslim). This includes purity of body, clothing, place, and heart. Al-Quddus also reminds believers to keep their intentions pure. Worship done for show (riya) corrupts the purity of the deed. The Name calls believers to sincerity (ikhlas), doing deeds solely for Allah. The Name also relates to the sanctity of sacred spaces. Mosques are houses of Allah, Al-Quddus, and should be treated with respect, clean, free from worldly talk, and dedicated to worship. The Prophet warned against making mosques places for buying and selling or idle conversation. For the believer, Al-Quddus inspires awe. When they enter a mosque, they are entering a place dedicated to the Pure One. When they pray, they stand before the Pure One. This awareness transforms worship from routine to sacred encounter. The Name also calls believers to purity in relationships. They should avoid impure speech (backbiting, slander, lies), impure actions (haram, injustice), and impure thoughts (arrogance, envy, malice). Al-Quddus is the source of all purity; the believer strives to reflect that purity in their life. The ultimate purity is in Paradise, where there is no impurity, no sin, no suffering, only the purity of being in the presence of Al-Quddus. The believer strives for that purity now, knowing that "He who purifies himself will be successful" (87:14).
