Cave Thawr

Cave Thawr is a cave on a mountain south of Mecca where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companion Abu Bakr (RA) sought refuge for three days during their migration (Hijrah) to Medina. To protect them from the pursuing Quraysh, Islamic tradition holds that a spider wove a web and a dove laid eggs at the entrance, making the cave appear undisturbed. This event is mentioned in the Quran as a moment where Allah's peace (Sakinah) descended upon them. It is celebrated as a profound example of Tawakkul (reliance on God) and the miraculous protection granted to those who strive in His cause. Cave Thawr is located on a mountain south of Mecca. When the Quraysh plotted to kill the Prophet, he and Abu Bakr fled Mecca, heading south toward Yemen, then turning north toward Medina. They took refuge in this cave for three days. The Quraysh pursued them, reaching the mouth of the cave. Abu Bakr was fearful, but the Prophet reassured him: "Do not fear; indeed, Allah is with us" (9:40). The Quran mentions this event: "If you do not aid the Prophet, Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved expelled him as the second of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, 'Do not fear; indeed, Allah is with us'" (9:40). Tradition holds that a spider wove a web across the cave entrance, and a dove laid eggs, leading the pursuers to believe the cave was empty. This is a sign of Allah's protection. The cave is about 1.5 meters high and narrow. It is a challenging climb, but many pilgrims visit to reflect on the Hijrah and Allah's protection. For believers, Cave Thawr is a symbol of tawakkul (reliance on Allah). The Prophet took means (hiding in the cave) but trusted Allah for the outcome. Allah protected them through means (the spider and the dove) that were beyond human control. The believer learns to take means and trust Allah. The Hijrah marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. It was the transition from persecution to empowerment, from Mecca to Medina, from weakness to strength. Cave Thawr is where that transition began. The believer trusts in Allah's protection, knowing that if Allah is with them, no one can harm them.
