Cave Hira is a small cave located on the Jabal al-Nour (Mountain of Light) near Mecca. It holds immense significance as the place where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) spent long periods in meditation and where he received the first revelation of the Quran from the Angel Jibril. The first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq were revealed here, marking the beginning of his prophethood. Today, the cave is a site of visitation for many pilgrims who wish to reflect on the humble beginnings of the divine message and the spiritual isolation that preceded the Prophet's public mission to transform the world. Cave Hira is a small cave, about 3.7 meters long and 1.6 meters wide, located on Jabal al-Nur (Mountain of Light), about 5 kilometers from the Kaaba. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would retreat to this cave before his prophethood, spending days and nights in contemplation, meditating on creation and seeking spiritual solitude. In 610 CE, during one of his retreats, the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) appeared to him and commanded: "Read!" The Prophet replied: "I am not a reader." The angel embraced him and repeated the command three times. Then he recited: "Read! In the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not" (96:1-5). These were the first verses of the Quran revealed, marking the beginning of the prophetic mission. The cave is about 4 meters long and 1.5 meters wide,a small, simple space. It is a challenging climb, but many pilgrims visit to reflect on the Prophet's devotion and the beginning of revelation. For believers, Cave Hira is a symbol of spiritual retreat, contemplation, and the beginning of the message that would transform the world. It reminds that revelation came in solitude, that the Prophet sought closeness to Allah before being called to guide others. The believer learns the value of reflection, of seeking solitude for worship, and of preparing the heart to receive guidance. The ultimate encounter is with Allah, and Cave Hira is where that encounter began for the final prophet.
