Jabal al-Nur, or the "Mountain of Light," is a mountain near Mecca that houses the Cave of Hira. It was at the summit of this mountain that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation from Allah through the Angel Jibril: "Read! In the name of your Lord..." The name symbolises the light of Islamic guidance that began to radiate across the world from this spot. Many pilgrims visit the mountain to reflect on the early moments of Prophethood and the spiritual solitude the Prophet sought before being chosen as the final messenger to humanity. Jabal al-Nur (Mountain of Light) rises about 640 meters above sea level and is located about 5 kilometers from the Kaaba. The Cave of Hira (Ghar Hira) is a small cave, about 3.7 meters long and 1.6 meters wide, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would retreat before his prophethood. He would spend days and nights in contemplation, meditating on the creation and seeking spiritual solitude. It was in this cave that the first verses of the Quran were revealed: "Read! In the name of your Lord who created,created man from a clinging clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not" (96:1-5). This event marked the beginning of the prophetic mission that would transform the world. The mountain is called Jabal al-Nur because the revelation that began there brought light to humanity, dispelling the darkness of ignorance and polytheism. Many pilgrims visit the mountain to experience the place where the final revelation began. The climb takes about 1-2 hours, and while challenging, it offers a profound spiritual experience,reflecting on the solitude the Prophet sought, the intensity of the revelation, and the weight of the responsibility that was placed upon him. The mountain also symbolizes the importance of contemplation and seeking solitude for spiritual growth. The Prophet's retreat to the cave was not a rejection of the world but a preparation for engaging with it. It teaches that before one can effectively guide others, one must first purify oneself. Jabal al-Nur remains a site of reflection for Muslims, reminding them of the humble beginnings of the final message and the extraordinary mercy that chose a man in a cave on a mountain to become the greatest guide for humanity.
