Fidyah is distinct from "Kaffarah" (expiation for a broken oath or sin) and "Qada" (making up a missed fast later). It is specifically for those who have no hope of recovering their health to fast. By mandating the feeding of the poor, the system of Fidyah ensures that the spiritual gap left by a missed ritual is filled with a social good. It reinforces the Islamic principle that worship is not just about personal rituals but also about communal responsibility and the alleviation of poverty within the community. Fidyah (ransom or compensation) is mentioned in the Quran regarding fasting: "And upon those who are able to fast but with hardship, a ransom (fidyah) of feeding a poor person" (2:184). This verse refers to those who cannot fast due to chronic illness, advanced age, or other permanent conditions. The fidyah is payment equivalent to feeding one poor person per missed day. The amount is approximately the same as zakat al-fitr,about 2-3 kg of staple food or its monetary equivalent. Unlike making up missed fasts (qada), which is required for temporary conditions, fidyah is the permanent alternative for those who will never regain ability to fast. The fidyah system demonstrates Islam's inclusivity,it does not require the impossible but provides a meaningful alternative. Even those who cannot fast can participate in the month's blessings through charity. The fidyah also serves a social purpose: it feeds the poor, ensuring that the spiritual benefits of Ramadan extend to those in need. For those who recover after paying fidyah, scholars differ on whether they must still make up the fasts; the cautious approach is to make them up if possible. Fidyah is also required for delaying makeup fasts until after the next Ramadan without valid excuse. This encourages timely fulfillment of religious obligations. The concept of fidyah teaches that worship adapts to human capacity while maintaining the principle of sacrifice,if one cannot sacrifice physical effort (fasting), one sacrifices wealth (charity). It ensures that no believer is excluded from the blessings of Ramadan, regardless of physical condition.
