Wrestling (Rukanah)

Wrestling (Musara'ah) is a Sunnah practice in Islam, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself engaged in wrestling and encouraged physical strength. A famous account relates that the Prophet (PBUH) wrestled with Rukanah, who was known for his strength, and defeated him. Wrestling represents the peak of Islamic physical Itqan (perfection) and the Nur (light) of a faith that values strength, skill, and healthy competition. It serves as a definitive Hujjah (proof) of the comprehensive nature of Islamic teachings, which address both spiritual and physical development, providing the Ummah with the Sakina (tranquility) and the guidance needed to maintain physical fitness for the pleasure of their Lord.

Theologically, the practice of wrestling is a manifestation of the principle of Strength (Quwwah) and the Hikmah (wisdom) of Divine law in the development of physical capability. It reflects the Nur of a faith that views physical strength as a primary means of attaining Basirah (spiritual insight) and fulfilling the duty to defend the community. The Prophet's (PBUH) own participation in wrestling and his defeat of Rukanah serves as a Burhan (proof) of the intellectual and moral vitality of the Islamic tradition, which encourages physical activity within ethical boundaries. This history reflects the Mizan (balance) between spiritual development and physical strength. Historically, the practice of wrestling has provided the Ummah with the moral resilience and the physical strength needed to maintain readiness. It underscores the absolute duty of every believer to maintain physical fitness and to be a witness to humanity through the power of integrity and radiant achievement.

For the modern Ummah, the legacy of wrestling is a source of immense pride and a roadmap for contemporary physical and spiritual reform. It teaches the believers the value of strength, the beauty of unshakeable faith, and the importance of maintaining an ethical and physically capable presence. In a modern world often characterized by the neglect of physical strength, the tradition of "Wrestling" provides a roadmap for internal peace and physical vitality. It encourages a culture of Ihsan (excellence) and communal responsibility. By honoring the prophetic example of physical activity, the Muslim community strengthens its identity and its commitment to the values of the Quran. It promotes a life of purpose and shared prosperity, ensuring that the light of truth continues to guide the human condition.
