Iblis is the personal name of the primary Shaitan (Satan) in Islam. According to the Quran, he was a Jinn who was elevated among the angels due to his previous devotion. However, he fell from grace when he arrogantly refused Allah's command to prostrate to Adam, claiming he was superior because he was made of fire. He is the "Whisperer" who seeks to lead humanity away from the Straight Path until the Day of Judgment. The Quran tells the story of Iblis: "And when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,' they prostrated, except Iblis. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord" (18:50). Iblis was not an angel; angels are created from light and have no free will to disobey. Iblis was a jinn who had attained a high station through worship, but his pride led to his downfall. When Allah commanded prostration to Adam, Iblis refused, saying: "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay" (7:12). For this arrogance, Allah expelled him from His mercy. Iblis asked for respite until the Day of Judgment, and Allah granted it. He then vowed to lead humanity astray: "Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful" (7:17). Iblis is the enemy of humanity. The Quran commands: "Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy" (35:6). He whispers evil suggestions (waswasa) to humans, trying to lead them away from Allah. However, he has no power over the sincere believers who rely on Allah. The Prophet taught that Iblis places his throne on water and sends his devils to tempt humans. The most successful devil is the one who causes the most corruption. Iblis is not an independent force; he acts only by Allah's permission and cannot harm believers except as a test. For believers, Iblis is a reminder of the danger of pride. His sin was arrogance,he thought himself better than Adam. The believer avoids this sin, recognizing that all superiority is in taqwa (God-consciousness), not in lineage, race, or physical nature. The believer also seeks refuge in Allah from Iblis and his whispers. The Quran commands: "And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah" (7:200). The believer recites the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) for protection. Iblis is also a reminder that Allah's mercy is vast. Iblis was given respite until the Day of Judgment, giving him time to repent, but he refused. The believer, in contrast, seizes the opportunity to repent and turn to Allah. They do not let pride prevent them from returning to their Lord. The ultimate fate of Iblis is Hell, and the believer seeks to be among those saved from his influence and from the Fire.
