Surah Al-Nas (The Mankind) is the 114th and final chapter of the Quran. It is a "Mu'awwidhatayn" (one of the two surahs of refuge), revealed to seek Allah's protection from the "Waswasa" (whisperings) of "Shaytan," whether from among the jinn or mankind. For the "Ummah," this Surah is a spiritual shield, emphasizing that true "Aman" (safety) is found only by retreating to the Lord, King, and God of mankind. It teaches the believer to remain vigilant against internal and external spiritual threats. Surah Al-Nas is the 114th and final chapter of the Quran. It was revealed in Mecca along with Surah Al-Falaq, forming the Mu'awwidhatayn (the two surahs of refuge). The Prophet (peace be upon him) received these surahs when he was affected by the magic of a Jewish sorcerer, and they provided complete protection. The surah declares: "Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers into the hearts of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind'" (114:1-6). The surah emphasizes three attributes of Allah: He is the Lord (Rabb) of mankind, the One who nurtures, sustains, and guides; He is the King (Malik) of mankind, the One who rules over all, to whom belongs all authority; He is the God (Ilah) of mankind, the One alone worthy of worship. The evil from which refuge is sought is the "whisperer who withdraws",Satan, who whispers evil suggestions into human hearts, then withdraws when he is disobeyed or when Allah is remembered. The whisperer may be from among the jinn (like Iblis and his followers) or from among mankind (those who encourage evil). Surah Al-Nas is recited for protection from evil influences, from the whispers of Satan, and from the harm of people. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite it and Surah Al-Falaq before sleeping, and he would recite them over the sick. He said: "O 'Uqbah! Learn the two surahs of refuge. Never have you sought refuge with anything like them" (Ahmad). For believers, Surah Al-Nas is recited regularly,in morning and evening remembrances, before sleep, after prayers, and when feeling fear or distress. It is a reminder that ultimate protection comes from Allah, that He is the only Lord, King, and God, and that turning to Him is the answer to all fear.
