An Ijazah is a traditional Islamic "Certificate" or "License" granted by a teacher to a student, authorizing them to transmit a specific text or field of knowledge. It is the foundation of the "Isnad" system, which ensures that religious knowledge is passed down through an unbroken chain of authorized transmitters reaching back to the author or the Prophet (PBUH). An Ijazah is only granted after the student has mastered the subject and demonstrated their proficiency to the satisfaction of the master. This system preserves the integrity, accuracy, and spiritual authority of Islamic sciences, particularly Quranic recitation and Hadith. The ijazah represents a sacred trust (amanah) between teacher and student. Unlike modern academic degrees, which certify completion of a program, the ijazah specifically authorizes the recipient to teach others. It creates an unbroken chain (sanad) of transmission connecting contemporary scholars back to the original source, whether the Prophet for Hadith, the Quranic reciters for qira'at, or classical authors for their texts. This chain serves as both quality control and spiritual connection. The ijazah system has been adapted for modern contexts, with some institutions issuing ijazah for contemporary fields, though its traditional heart remains in classical Islamic sciences. Obtaining an ijazah requires not just intellectual mastery but also moral integrity (adab), as the teacher vouches for the student's character. This system has preserved Islamic knowledge for over fourteen centuries, ensuring that what is taught today authentically represents what was taught by the Prophet.
