Israfil is one of the archangels in Islam, tasked with the momentous duty of blowing the Trumpet (Sur) to signal the arrival of the Day of Judgment. According to tradition, the first blast will cause all living things to perish and the universe to collapse, while the second blast will initiate the resurrection of all human beings for their final reckoning. Israfil is depicted as being in a state of constant readiness, awaiting the Divine command. Belief in his role serves as a reminder to Muslims of the certainty of the Afterlife and the importance of earthly deeds. Israfil is one of the four archangels, along with Jibril, Mika'il, and Azrael. He is known as the "Angel of the Trumpet." The Quran describes the Trumpet (Sur) and its blasts: "And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on" (39:68). Israfil is the angel responsible for this. He holds the Trumpet to his lips, waiting for Allah's command. The first blast will signal the end of the world; the second will signal the resurrection. The Prophet described Israfil as having the Trumpet to his lips, his brow furrowed, awaiting the command to blow. He said: "How can I be at ease when the one with the Trumpet has placed it to his lips, waiting to blow?" (Tirmidhi). This Hadith expresses the constant awareness that the end could come at any moment. Israfil's role is a reminder of the suddenness of death and the reality of resurrection. The believer lives with the awareness that the Trumpet could blow at any moment, and they strive to be in a state of faith and righteousness when it does. Israfil also has a role in the natural world; some traditions say he is responsible for carrying Allah's commands to the other angels. For believers, Israfil is a symbol of the inevitability of the Hour. His constant readiness reminds them to be ready as well. They do not delay repentance, do not postpone good deeds, and do not waste time. They live with the awareness that the Trumpet will sound, and they want to be found among the righteous when it does. The Prophet taught a supplication seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave and the trials of life and death. This supplication reflects the awareness of the events that will follow the Trumpet. For believers, Israfil is a reminder that this world is temporary, that the Hereafter is certain, and that every soul will be resurrected and judged. They live with that awareness, preparing for the day when Israfil will blow the Trumpet and all will stand before their Lord.
